SCOPE - The agrochemicals market in Latin America has been growing significantly in recent years, Brazil and Argentina being the largest consumer's base in the world. The pesticides market was estimated at 14.1 Billion dollars in 2015 and is projected to reach 19.6 Billion dollars by 2020.
This growth underscores the importance of having a joint strategy for regulation that strengthens the countries of the region and allows them to better face the challenges of pesticides expanding consumption.
Characterizing the toxicity of pesticides is an essential step of risk assessment process.
Currently, the effects assessment is typically defined as a tiered approach where a battery of acute and chronic tests (on standard organisms), microcosm and mesocosm, semi field and field experiments are used to screen pesticides toxicity and to estimate its ecological risk.
The aim of this session is to discuss the challenges of building strategies for effect assessment of pesticides in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, especially in Latin American countries.
Results of ecotoxicity studies on the adverse effects of pesticides on aquatic and terrestrial organisms are of interest in the present session. We especially welcome presentations focused on Latin American relevant ecosystems and agricultural scenarios, endemic sensitive species, new protocols and techniques with relevance for the regulatory decision-making process.
The session will be interdisciplinary and bring together specialists from the academy across a wide range of research areas, industry and regulators (authorities) with the view to enhance approaches in the effect assessment of pesticides.
